Doublethink

Filed under: Politics — femalebug @ 11:14 pm

doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them. … To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.

I have just finished reading 1984 by Orwell and throughout the book I was thinking how well he described the new man envisioned by communists. Such a terrifying vision of the future, and when you come to think about it, not so far from the present.

In his book, Orwell introduces the concept of doublethink.

Sounds alien to you? What about more familiar concepts:

Love is hate
All religion is based of principles of love your neighbor and such. As I know better Christianity, let’s speak only about it.
Thou shall not kill and Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself are 2 main ideas upon Christianity is based. But which true believing Christians choose when and how to apply it. Like loving Jesus and supporting Bush in invading Iraq and killing people (See documentary Jesus Camp)
A person is a person is person no matter how small.
What about A person is a person no matter
-> what religion
-> what country
Or A person is a person period.

War is peace
Believing that US is in Iraq to bring democracy (or was it to destroy their weapons of mass destruction?) and at the same time forgetting that Sadam was an ally all the while he committed the crimes and us was in full knowledge.

Officially assigning blame for 9/11 to Osama bin Laden and going after Saddam Hussein… By the way, have you heard anything lately about Osama?

And what better example than the words of the man himself:
I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we’re really talking about peace.
Remarks by the president Bush on homeownership
at the Department of Housing and Urban Development
Washington, D.C.June 18, 2002,

And you should be surprised about this little quote. I mean, US has always been fighting for peace, a peace or another. And it is not true what George Carlin once said “Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity”, is it?
